Proposed Bike Plan

Syracuse, N.Y. ~ A meeting will be held tonight where two different bike plans will be discussed to connect University Hill and downtown.

One plan has bike lanes on both sides of the street and the other has two bike lanes restricted to one side of the street.Official are trying to get people out of cars and out enjoying the city. "We need to choose a plan and move forward, said Eric Person, Community Director. Tonight we're hoping for feedback."

The lines will starting on East Genessee and head down Fayette creating a clear cut path from
University Hill to downtown Syracuse. "The purpose is to accommodate all types of travel," said Steve Kearny, City Planner.

Onondaga Prayer

Syracuse, N.Y. ~ This afternoon people came together at Onondaga lake park for prayer.

They are praying for the lake because it is not drinkable due to heavy pollution. The Onondaga nation wants the lake to be clean from the pollution, so they prayed for purification of the lake, by pouring clean spring water into it this afternoon. More than 20 people gathered for the ceremony and according to the New York State Department Onondaga lake is one of the most polluted lakes in North America.

Arts & Culture: Impact The Economy

Syracuse, N.Y. ~ The Downtown Committee held a meeting to recognize the Arts and Cultural Organization in Onondaga County, which generates more than $62 million per year in economic revenue.

The Downtown committee's revealed their economic initiative to enhance intellectual and economic growth.

"The real opportunity is for people to realize that a lot of these arts and cultural institutions become the new anchors for downtown," said Stephen Butler, Exec. Dir. of Cultural Council. The Committee hopes the momentum of their Downtown projects and commercial will create local government revenue.

It's refreshing to have so many members of the business community taking the arts so seriously and recognizing that those kinds of partners are needed for a thriving Downtown." David Mankiewicz, Downtown Committee Exec. Dir.

Ed McMahon Dies In Los Angeles

Syracuse, N.Y. ~ Ed McMahon, the loyal "Tonight Show" sidekick passed away.

Tonight show legend Ed McMahon died earlier at Ronald Reagan UCLA Hospital. He was 86. For thirty years he famously introduced Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show.

There is no word yet on what the cause of death. McMahon broke his neck in a fall in March 2007, which prevented him from working and he suffered from many health problems in the past few months. He survived by his wife and five children. No funeral arrangements have yet been made.

Chase Corporate Challenge

Liverpool, N.Y.~ People are lacing up their running shoes and hitting parkway.

Tonight more than 6,000 runners, from nearly two-hundred and fifty companies, are expected to hit Onondaga Lake Parkway, for the 27th annual Chase Corporate Challenge which includes a 3.5 mile road race that begins and ends at Griffin Stadium.

The event kicks off at 6:25 tonight and all proceeds will go to the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection. Employees can expect to see a different competitive edge from their co-workers.

Swamp Rat Run

Syracuse, N.Y. ~ Staying fit is a growing concern for kids. Local elementary schools are encouraging their boys and girls to enter in the annual Swamp Rat Runs at Oneida Shores Park.

Race Director Richard Nastasi has seen growth in participation in this event over the years because local elementary schools are pushing their kids to get fit. "We're now in the computer age and the computer games where you sit and you sit and you don't do anything physical, said Nastasi, Race Director. And I think it is important to encourage kids to get involved in athletic types of activities."

There were around 700 entrants in the boys and girls mile runs combined. The Swamp Rat Runs included a 5k followed by a 10k race. Many parents bring their kids to events like this to keep them active. "Running is an athletic activity and it helps them in terms of the physical fitness," said Nastasi.

All mile runners were given souvenir ribbons to show they competed in the races, but only the top finishers received awards and for some, crossing the finish line was just not good enough. "You gotta run smart for the first couple of mile, so you can ruin stupid, said Chris Raulli. Kids are mainly encourage to enter the race, but there is no age limit, making it an enjoyable day for anyone looking for a little fun in the sun, exercise or friendly competition.

Women Box

Syracuse, N.Y. ~ Boxing is a sport traditionally dominated by men but more women are determined to go pro.

There are very few woman boxers, but Tasmyn Davis standing at 5' 9" and 180 pounds says she was born to be a prizefighter. "I'm giving myself a year, said Tasmyn Daivs, female boxer. I'm gonna train hard every day."

Davis had received a lot of negative feedback but she is not letting that stop her from achieving her dream. "The type of life I come from, people don't do much with themselves said Davis. I want to show my little brothers that you can do something with you life. That its okay to dream."

And being a pro-boxer is a dream that Davis has been pursuing for about four months. With daily training, her coach and her teammates say they can see her on TV one day, but it won't happen over night. "But if she sticks with it, said John Jones, UFC Fighter. I don't see why we won't be seeing her on HBO in a few years."

Metro Transit Train Crash: Old Fleet

Syracuse, N.Y. ~ Investigators and officials continue to work at the scene of a rush-hour collision between two Metro transit trains in northeast Washington, D.C.

Two subway trains collided in a Metro Transit System in northeast Washington, D.C., Tuesday morning, killing seven people in the nation's capital and sending more than 70 people to the hospital.

Officials said the trains were apart of an old fleet and needed to be phased out because of safety concerns but "Metrorail transit system kept the old trains running despite warnings in 2006," said Debbie Hersman of the National Transportation Safety Board.

The NTSB accused Metro authorities of ignoring its recommendations, but Hersman said she wanted to be cautious of what caused the rear-end collision.

Kodachrome Becomes Extinct

The classic film is no longer being sold

SYRACUSE- Today marks the final day Kodachrome will be sold due to the constantly decreasing demand. Once popular for its great color and grain quality, the film has been replaced by newer technology.

"No one's brought me a role of Kodachrome in years," said Sharon Pickard, manager of Industrial Color Labs in Syracuse.

Paul Simon helped get the name Kodachrome stuck in the minds of Americans with the release of his song "Kodachrome" in 1973.

Kodachrome, originally produced by Rochester-based Kodak, has grown unpopular to consumers. NCC News asked about a dozen people their thoughts on Kodachrome passing and the answer we got most often was some version of, "Kodachrome...I have no idea what that is."

Although today marks the end of a great era in film, it might stand for the progress of newer technology even more.

Syracuse Construction is Very Visible

SYRACUSE- Construction can be seen in Syracuse at many locations. While that might frustrate drivers, there's no way to get around it.

The only good news commuters can hear is some of the projects are scheduled to be completed on time or even early. For example, constrcution foreman Joseph Lang was asked about the progress made on a steam pipe relocation on Comstock Avenue.

"It's due to be completed, 100% complete, by August 7th, but we expect to be completed two weeks early," Lang said.

However, the major state funded projects will take more time.

"In Central New York, we have a very compressed construction season when all work can be done. So, weather dictates a lot of what we can do and when we can do it," said Michelle Clark of the State Department of Transportation.

Interstate 690 eastbound and the Interstate 81 south bound ramp are closed for resurfacing and should be opened the third week of July.

"Sometime after the first week of July we'll be resurfacing I-690 by Teall Avenue and 481. That'll be a project that's a heavily travelled stretch of highway," Clark said.

Hancock Airport Gets a Check-Up

Check-up occurs every 15 years

SYRACUSE- Hancock International Airport gets a check-up every 15 years. This year it's the runways that need some work.

"We will be rehabilitating the runway intersection. We will be rehabilitating a portion a portion of the taxi way in addition to some other projects," said Public Informational officer Chris Reale.

Hancock International Airport put in a bid to get funding from the Department of Transportation and the FAA to pay for the construction.

"It will be resurfaced, repaved, have new lighting and new signage," said Reale.

Today, the Common Council voted "yes" on funding the very expensive 63 million dollar project.

"It is a good thing both for the airport and for the area," Reale said.

Reale also says the project will start in August and should be done in 30 days.

Patti Cooper Sentenced Today

Cooper receives sentence

SYRACUSE- Patti Cooper was sentenced to five years probation this morning at the Onondaga County Criminal Courthouse. She accepted a plea deal, avoiding the possibility of being convicted of murder and keeping her out of prison for life.

The body of a baby was found in a trash can in Onondaga Park in 1981. Cooper was charged with second-degree murder last year after police linked her to murder by DNA testing on cigarette butts taken from her trash.

However, with the plea deal, all DNA evidence is thrown out and only a mitochondria DNA test--which only proves Cooper's genealogy--they didn't have.

"We never hid from the fact that this case was weak," said prosecutor Rick Trunfio. "Evidence from the original case investigation had been inadvertently destroyed or discarded so we had no physical evidence."

Cooper has not admitted she did it or even that it was her baby. Still she took the deal.

"There is a possibility--like anything else--that you could lose," defense attorney Richard Priest said. "And, if you lose, you're going to go to jail for the rest of your life."

The defense didn't want to risk a lifetime sentence, so the 27 year case concludes today with a punishment for Cooper--but no jail time.

Drumlins' Greenskeeper Busy Behind the Scenes

Greenskeeper doesn't get much recognition for the hard work

SYRACUSE- As the head Greenskeeper at Drumlins Golf Course, Peter McPartland knows the amount of work it takes to maintain a course.

"Usually we're out here by 6:00 AM, five o'clock on weekends and we work anywhere from eight to 12 hours a day," McPartland said.

According to McPartland, he mows about ten thousand yards of grass a day down to tiny millimeters depending on if he's cutting the rough or the fairway. This is the standard job day for the maintenance crew.

"We have everything from weed whackers and push mowers that most people would use on a lawn, to big unit fairway mowers that can cut down to fractions of an inch," said Matt Bednarski, an assistant to McPartland.

Most people would hate waking up before the sun rises every day, but maintenance worker Michael Frasher doesn't mind at all.

"I love being out here, you know what I mean?" said Frasher. "It's a challenge being out here and prepping a course."

At the end of the day, with new divots scattered across the course, the Greenskeeper and his maintenance staff know the next day starts pretty soon.

Legacy of Civil War Still Alive

Volunteers seek to educate others about the Civil War

JAMESVILLE, N.Y.-The 28th Volunteer Infantry of New York hit the battlefield in Jamesville over the weekend. The group put on a reenactment of the war that divided the nation in two.

The Volunteer Infantry makes several stops in Central New York and play both sides of the war: North vs. South. While the actual fighting may merely be a reenactment, the muskets and the rifles they use are real.

"Contrary to what most believe, we don't do this to play with guns, we do this because we're passionate about the history and enjoy educating people," said Timothy Buckham, captain of the 28th Volunteer Infantry Company.

The performance not only shows a battle on the field, but it also showcases how soldiers lived away from the battlefield.

"I would of stayed home...kept the home going, the farm going, sending clothes they would need to where they are...a lot of letters," said Buckham.

Most of the volunteers enjoy reenacting the Civil War because they have family ties to it.

"My grandfather fought on one side and my other grandfather fought with the North," said Marilyn Dirk.

More than anything, the Civil War reenactment is a dedication to the over 600,000 lives that were lost.

Man Seriously Injured in Hydroplane Race

Despite injury, Shaw planning to return to racing

SYRACUSE- Richard Shaw is a special education history teacher. But he also enjoys racing hydroplanes. He raced in last weekend's Syracuse Hydrofest.

Unfortunately, Shaw never finished the race because his boat hit some slow but large waves called rollers that sent him into the air.

"It used the wave more as a ramp...and I felt the engine wind up and I knew I was completely out of the water and...the back of the boat slapped against the same roller and I nosed it on the right side," said Shaw.

The boat landed upside down in the water and he was stuck underneath it.

"I somersaulted I couldn't tell you how many times...and when it finally stopped I was upside down and my air helmet wasn't working and I had the wind knocked out of me and I was sucking water," said Shaw.

Despite the injuries sustained in yesterday's accident, Shaw says he is looking forward to returning to racing.

"I've had incidents before where I've spun out and every time I got back into the boat it seemed like I was going to spin again," Shaw said. "It takes you a heat or two to get your confidence back."

Shaw says racing has been in his blood since childhood.

"My father raced since 1973 and I went to my first boat race when I was two weeks old," said Shaw. "I started driving when I was 14, so I literally grew up in the sport and I love it."

Despite the sport not being popular, Shaw's love of the game motivates him to race each and every time.

Tropical Storm Andres Strengthens off SW Mexico

Andres is first storm of Eastern Pacific hurricane season

Tropical Storm Andres is getting stronger off the southwestern coast of Mexico early this morning. Forecasters say the coming days could see it become a hurricane.

A tropical storm watch has been issued along part of the Mexico coast, even though it is too soon to tell if the storm will make landfall.

Late last night, Andres became the first named storm of the Eastern Pacific hurricane season, which is typically busiest between July and September.

Forecasters say it's been 40 years since it took so long in the Eastern Pacific season to officially name a tropical storm.

Obama to Announce Agreement with Drug Companies

Agreement to help close the gap in prescription drug coverage

President Obama will make a formal announcement Monday stating an agreement has been made by the pharmaceutical industry to assist in closing a gap in prescription drug coverage under Medicare.

The president has invited Barry Rand, head of AARP, to appear with him.

The drug companies have promised to spend $80 billion over the next ten years to reduce the cost of drugs for seniors. The money will also pay for part of Obama's health care legislation.

The deal was originally struck with Senator Max Baucus, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, as well as the White House.

North Korea Issues Nuclear Threat

Obama says U.S. is prepared

North Korea is declaring itself a "proud nuclear power" and will strike if provoked. Japan's Coast Guard says it has received notice from North Korea's maritime authority that ships will be banned off the North Korean coast starting Thursday because of "military exercises."

President Obama is telling Americans that his administration is "fully prepared" for any move Pyongyang might make. Obama says he won't reward "belligerence and provocation in the way that's been done in the past."

Meanwhile, a member of South Korean intelligence says a North Korean cargo ship possibly carrying banned weapons appears to be headed towards Myanmar.

New U.N. Security Council sanctions require member states to inspect vessels believed to contain prohibited goods. The sanctions are intended to punish North Korea for conducting a secret nuclear test last month

Deadly Bombs Hit Baghdad

Violence escalates ahead of June 30 withdrawal of U.S. forces

Several bombings have killed at least 13 people in the Baghdad metropolitan area. In the deadliest incident, Iraqi police say at least 5 people were killed and 20 wounded by a car bomb.

A roadside bomb exploded in Sadr City next to a bus carrying Iraqi high school students, killing at least three and wounding 13.

Police say another car bomb went off on the east side of the Tigris River, killing two people and wounding nine.

Violence has been prevalent ahead of the June 30th deadline calling for the withdrawal of U.S. forces from major cities in Iraq. Iraqi administrators expect militants to step up bombing attacks around the deadline.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Threatens Protesters

Guard issues warning against protestors

Iran's Revolutionary Guard has issued a warning today to opponents disputing a presedential election.

Protestors have been fighting in the streets for weeks disputing a national election in which Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected. The protestors believe the election was rigged and that Mir Hossein Mousavi should have won.

The Revolutionary Guard, considered to be the most powerful security force in Iran, says any further opposition protests would be met with "revolutionary confrontation."

Meantime, Iran's highest electoral authority, the Guardian Council, has reported voting irregularities in 50 electoral districs in the June 12th vote.

Mousavi encourages the people of Iran to keep up the protests, saying "The country belongs to you. Prostesting lies and fraud is your right."

Journalists Escape in Afghanistan

The two were held captive for seven months

Two journalists held over seven months by the Taliban in Pakistan successfully escaped from jail. Afghan journalist Tahir Ludin was held captive along with New York Times Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist David Rhode.

Ludin and Rhode escaped by tricking guards and dropping down a 20-foot wall with a rope. Ludin says the last two to three months seemed so hopeless, he considered committing suicide with a knife.

The journalists were abducted November 10th south of the Afghan capital of Kabul.

Ludin climbed a five-foot high wall before spraining his right foot when he went down the 20-foot drop that followed.

Ludin says they wanted to make their escape when the city had electrical power because a noisy air conditioner would block out some sound.

Fifteen minutes after their initial escape, the two arrived at a Pakistani militia post, where guards threatened to kill them thinking they were suicide bombers.

Eventually, the journalists were transferred to Islambad, Pakistan's capital, and then to an American military base outside Kabul.

Pilot Dies In Flight, Plane Lands Safely

Continental flight 61, en route from Brussels to Newark, landed safety around noon today at Newark International Airport, after the pilot died mid-flight.

The airline reported that the 60-year-old Newark-based pilot died of natural causes.

The crew only told passengers there was a medical emergency but many realized something bigger may have happened when fire trucks and medical personnel met the plane on the runway.

The airline said the pilot had 32 years of service with Continental.

Protests Continue In Iran

Thousands of supporters of Mir Hossein Moussavi-Iran's top opposition presidential candidate-protested in silence today as they marched the streets wearing black.

Moussavi addressed the peaceful crowd of thousands, asking for a new vote in the election that was called in favor of presidential incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The government called the election last Friday in Ahmadinejad's favor, a move that sparked violent protests.

In Washington D.C., Iranian-Americans also took to the streets. Angered by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, they protested his reception and recognition of Ahmadinejad as the Iranian president.

Washington Nationals Pick Top Pitcher

Secaucus, N.J.--The Washington Nationals selected pitcher Stephen Strasburg as first pick in Major League Baseball's Tuesday night amateur draft.

Strasburg's 102 mph fastball has attracted attention and baseball analysts consider him one of the most talented picks in amateur baseball right now.

So talented in fact that some are saying Strasburg might skip the minors and go straight to the majors.

This means Strasburg could potentially bypass pitching for the National's AAA affiliate, our own Syracuse Chiefs.

But as NCC sports reporter Ben Gellman found out, for now, nothing is for sure. Despite Strasburg's obvious talent, organizers, managers, and teammates are all skeptical of the possibility of that big move.

Phoenix Pharmacy's Plan to Prevent Pharming

Parents who suspect their kids might be popping pills can pick up free drug test kits at a Phoenix Pharmacy.

Phoenix, N.Y. -- The Medicine Place pharmacy started out with 40 drug test kits but they have had to order 35 more.

Phoenix parents who suspect their kids might be abusing prescription drugs can get one of these kits anonymously and free of charge.

Only a few weeks old, the program was created in reaction to a national increase in prescription drug abuse, a trend also known as pharming.

So, as the supply of free kits dwindles, Phoenix residents react. NCC reporter Kate Sheehy is in Phoenix and will have more on this story later today.

CNY Reacts to Same Sex Health Care

Syracuse, N.Y.-- President Obama's Wednesday announcement, detailing same-sex marriage benefits for federal employees, has sparked controversy on both sides of the issue.

In his speech, Obama said federal employees with same-sex partners would be offered specific limited benefits not including some of the most basic like health insurance and retirements.

A Syracuse Society Recaptures the Renaissance

Medieval combatants storm Syracuse city parks as they recreate the Renaissance.

Syracuse, N.Y.-- Members of this ancient association hail from a place that they call the Barony of Delftwood. In modern day terms, this means Syracuse and it's surrounding areas.

These people are part of a group called the SCA, short for the Society for Creative Anachronism, that aims to re-create European life before the 17th century. This means sword-play, fencing, archery and other, less violent, pursuits like theater and jewelry making.

The Syracuse SCA meets once a week with weapons in hand to practice combat techniques and incorporate a bit of the Middle Ages into their 21th century lives.

They even take on new names like Anastasie deLamoure and Olafr Thorvardarson to fit their ancient alter-egos.

Nearly 100 people belong to this particular SCA chapter but worldwide membership has grown to a whopping 26,000 since the society’s creation in 1968.

Thornden Park Roses

The E.M. Mills Garden in Thornden Park is in full bloom with over 4,000 roses on display. The roses come from a variety of different donors, some orange roses for example, were donated to the garden by Syracuse University. Volunteers at the garden held a celebration today and invited guests to listen to live music, eat snacks, and compete in hat decorating contests. The celebration is honoring the Syracuse Rose Society's 85th anniversary, making it the oldest continuous rose society in the United States. The month of June also happens to be the month of the rose, and with all the beautiful colors and warm June weather it was easy to see why the month and flower were matched together.

But not all people can enjoy the garden without wanting to take a little home. Last night two women stole some roses from the garden and were chased by police. The women weren't caught and some of the volunteers think cameras at the garden would help prevent this."It's a public garden, it's for the public to enjoy, not for individuals, you want to walk around, look at the roses, you're more than welcome to. But not to take them home," said Dan Magero. Magero has volunteered for the garden for over 25 years and said this was not the first time the garden has been targeted.

But the volunteers and small crowd who made it out to the garden today weren't deterred and say they hope the garden lasts another 85 years.

Ten Months Later: Still No Progress On Ronald McDonald Home

It was almost a year ago when the Civil War era home on East Genesee was demolished so the Ronald McDonald House could be built.

"They were so fast to tear it down and you would think they would put something up," said Gloria Sage, Syracuse Neighbor in Favor of Historical Preservation.

Sage also said she feels the Ronald McDonald House could have been built in many other locations.

RMH Executive Director Beth Trunfio said last August that the project would take only ten months to a year to complete. Its opening was to coincide with the Children's Hospital opening at Upstate Medical. Children's Hospital is scheduled to open September 2009. But on eleven hundred East Genesee Street, there are still no signs of construction.

Common Councilor Patrick Hogan voted against historical designation but is confident that the council made the right decision.

The house needed a super majority vote of at least seven members to vote for the approval but the house had only six members vote in their favor.

"The progress was broken, " said Michael Stanton, President of the South East University Neighborhood Association. "The city has since gone back to amend the ordinance that allowed the super majority requirement for this to be saved and that won't happen again, but the damage has been done."

But almost a year after the lot was purchased and the house was destroyed only an empty lot sits at the corner of East Genesee and University Avenue.

Local Food Pantries Benefit from Stimulus Money

Syracuse, N.Y. - The economy is not only hurting families, it's also hurting food banks and pantries.

That can be troublesome, when you factor in that now is the time hurting families need food banks the most.

The Food Bank of Central New York reports a 12 percent increase in people seeking food assistance.

But, local pantries don't have to worry about running out of food.

"One of the things across the nation is you're seeing a lot of empty pantries, you're not seeing that here," says Beth Slater, from the Food Bank of Central New York.

That's because the federal government is stepping in through the Emergency Food Assistance Program.

Under this program, economic stimulus money can be designated for food banks and pantries.

The Food Bank of Central New York just received a shipment with 350,000 pounds of food.

That is roughly 275,000 meals worth of food. And, it is going to local pantries such as Catholic Charities and P.E.A.C.E., Inc.

Instead of turning away people, these pantries can serve them in their time of need.

"That's what kept me and my wife on my feet," says John Whittaker of Syracuse.

And, it's what kept food in their mouths.

Community College Sees Increased Enrollment In Poor Economy

Syracuse, N.Y. - Community Colleges, such as Onondaga Community College, are becoming more popular among high school graduates uncertain about what they want to do in the future.

Over the past five years, the enrollment has increased from 8,000 students to 11,000 students (both figures are approximates).

One of the most attractive features of these 2-year institutions is that they are much less expensive than traditional, 4-year universities.

"The cost of coming here was a lot cheaper, you know, to test the waters if you are not sure what field you want to go into," says Michael McLean, an O.C.C student.

The annual tuition cost at O.C.C is less than $9,000.

It is possible to attend OCC for four years at this rate before one approaches the approximate annual tuition of Syracuse University.

Of course, it usually doesn't take four years to earn a degree from O.C.C.

"Typically it's two and a half [years]. Life gets in the way often, (for instance) if you're working," says Kathy Perry, Director of Admissions.

Obama to Approve Benefits for Same-Sex Partners of Federal Workers

Washington, D.C. - President Obama is expected to sign a memorandum in the Oval Office this afternoon, which gives some health care benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees.

It is unclear as to which benefits will be granted to the couples, however, it is not expected that the President will grant full health coverage.

This comes days after the Justice Department filed a brief supporting the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and appeared to equate gay-marriage with incest.

DOMA was signed into effect by President Bill Clinton in 1996. It effectively prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage.

The law defines marriage as "a legal union between one man and one woman as husband wife" and a spouse as "a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife."

President Obama's expected memorandum signing also comes just over a week after the Supreme Court refused to hear a legal challenge to the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Triche Ball

DeWitt, N.Y. - He made the varsity basketball team at Jamesville-Dewitt High School as a freshman.

Not only did he make the team, he averaged 20 points per game.

Not too shabby.

But 12 games into his sophomore season, Brandon Triche suffered a career-threatening setback.

He tore the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) of his left knee.

It was a given his season was over.

"I felt devastated 'cuz everybody worked so hard for the season," says Triche.

The Red Rams wound up falling short of the state title that season.

Triche returned for his junior season and helped J-D win the 2008 New York Class A State Championship. The team went undefeated.

Even so, there were doubts as to whether or not Triche had fully healed.

The scouts backed off. His ability to play college ball was questioned.

But, that just meant one thing for Triche's senior season:

"I'm trying to go out with a bang try to do it as best as I can," he says.

And, that's exactly what he did. J-D won the state title again Triche's senior season. He averaged 22 points per game as well as 8 assists and 8 rebounds.

He was given two very prestigious awards: 1) Gatorade's New York Boys Basketball Player of the Year and 2) New York's Mr. Basketball.

This fall, Triche will be a member of the Syracuse University Men's Basketball team.

Somewhere, the college scouts that gave up on him are knee-deep in regret.....

A CNY etiquette expert disagrees with these CDC recommendations

Syracuse, N.Y. - We all sneeze. From little children to famous politicians, it happens to the best of us. Even animals, such as pandas, sneeze.

NCC News' Jocelyn Ehnstrom has been caught in the act as well

But, while everybody sneezes, we all sneeze in different ways.

While one can make the traditional "Ah-CHOO!" sound, other people have trademark facial expressions that are revealed when they are about to sneeze.

Some people sneeze into their hands, while others sneeze into one of their arms.

And there is debate as to which one of these two techniques spreads fewer germs and, thus, demonstrates better manners.

"I do not recommend that you sneeze into the hand ever," says Miesje Havens. Havens is the founder of The Refined School of Protocol and Etiquette in Syracuse.

She is a proponent of sneezing into one's arm (provided you are wearing sleeves at the time) as it is more sanitary in her opinion, especially when people are eating.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still believes that one should sneeze into one's hands while using a tissue.

At least in this heated debate the CDC and Havens can agree on one thing: both recommend that you never shake someone's hand after sneezing.

That is, unless you have washed your hands........

Paint Ballin'

Syracuse, N.Y. - For Jean Negron the paintball addiction started innocently enough.

"A friend of mine, he got a little set up in his backyard. He just told me I should come there one time to play with him; and I did it; and ever since I've been hooked," says Negron.

Chris Barbay has been playing for a decade.

"I think I bought my first gun that Christmas and I've been playing ever since," says Barbay.

Both Negron and Barbay are members of the Boss Ballers, a paintball group that has been together "two, three years at least" according to Barbay.

It has grown from four members to eleven members over this time. This has allowed the group to enter two separate teams in the New York Paintball League.

Besides the excitement that paintball brings, the group also enjoys the friendships and camaraderie that come with playing together.

"We're a family," says Barbay (as a teammate jokingly strokes the top of his head).

A family that enjoys running around and shooting each other with paintballs.

For some, graffiti is a true art, but one that's unwelcome by Westcott shop owners

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Westcott-area shop owners are angry. Angry that it took so long to find the teen who’s been “tagging” their walls.

“It takes a long time to draw this stuff and no one sees them...it's incredible,” said Ron DeLuca, owner of Abdo’s Grocery.

Angry about having to buy paint and hire painters to cover the “art” left on facades by spray-painter Jordan Wood, 19.

“It’s $110 for the gallon of paint and then I call someone in to paint the building,” said Dino Sentra, owner of Westcott Florists.

Wood, who has been arrested 28 times, was picked up by police yesterday. It was his sixth arrest of the year for graffiti.

But Monday morning, shopkeepers say, a bottle-collector, a familiar face around the Westcott neighborhood, placed a call to police to tell them he spotted the vandal in-the-act.

But shopkeepers say they are worried another arrest won’t stop the rogue artist from spraying again.

Fayetteville Fire Department Facelift: Vote

FAYETTEVILLE, N.Y. -- At six this morning the polls opened. Four hours later only 40 ballots were cast. But the department says it expects more people to show up after work, to decide the fate of the Fayetteville Fire Department.

If the vote passes, the Fire Department will try to get federal stimulus money to expand and renovate the station. The cost is an estimated $6.45 million.

“Our quarters are very crammed. We have no room for future expansion if we were to add vehicles, add personnel.

Our storage is at a maximum,” lamented Fire Chief John Falgiatano. Only people who live in the Village of Fayetteville are eligible to vote, even though the Fire Department covers parts of Minoa and Manlius.

Each day the fire station responds to an average of nine calls. NCC News reporter Crystal Thune says the firefighters’ hard work does not go unnoticed by the people of Fayetteville.

“I have a scanner at home, so I hear every single call they go out on. And they are busy,” said May Becker, of Fayetteville. The polls close at nine tonight, and by the time a decision is reached, the busy firefighters themselves will have gone down the station’s poll, several times.

From Singapore (above) to Oswego, Go-Kart racing is a popular fastime

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- On Sunday nights in Oswego beautiful beds of flowers bite the dust. Literally.

Surrounded by a go kart track, Galletta’s greenhouse moonlights as a place to put the pedal to the metal.

“Sometimes, people will come up and be looking at the plants and see a go kart track and be like, ‘Look at this thing!’” said Chris Stevens, co-founder of Galletta’s Go-Karts.

Stevens and his brother Matt started racing Go-Karts in the 1990s but after Oswego speedway drove them off its track last year, the brothers took matters into their own…feet.

Every Sunday night, Galletta’s plays host to Go-Kart races. The Stevens brothers don’t charge for track time, only rentals, and prefer keeping the Kart track a place for fun, friends and fast racing.

“We like it the way it is now. Although we always leave the door open to something bigger,” said Matt Stevens.

And though the races rev on, the owners say it’s not about winning, but about whipping around corners, and having fun.

“We don’t have trophies…nothing like that. None of us will ever drive Nascar or anything like that, probably, but we still have fun,” said Rusell Hockey a regular Galletta’s racer.

The Silverbush family won the $35 million lotto

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- In economically turbulent times, people turn to chance to try to top their bank accounts.

Lottery sales are up $177 million in New York State from last year, a 5.1% increase, Scientific Games reported.

“They [lottery pots] grow a little in hard times when some people turn to them,” said Syracuse University Economics Professor John Yinger.

“A dollar and a dream. That’s it. That’s my philosophy with the numbers,” said Craig Davis, the owner of Seven Styles Store, the owner of a convenience store that is selling a lot of lotto tickets on South Salina.

While Davis hasn’t sold any big winning tickets lately, on the other side of town, Bob Fantacone, owner of Chase Cigar Store, sold the Silverbush family the $35 million ticket that had Syracuse in suspense.

The family came out publicly yesterday to claim their millions, a dream that many Central New Yorkers have.

“A week doesn't go by that we don’t have a thousand dollar winner, a couple of five hundred dollar winners, things like that on the instant tickets. We sell so many of them…that there have been a lot of winners,” said Fantacone.

In an economy where keeping a job feels like winning the lottery, a little luck, means a big win.

President Ahmadinejad's reelection has sparked massive protests

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iranian state media are reporting that a government-backed protest is filling the streets of downtown Tehran.

Protestors are demanding punishment for yesterday’s rioters.

Hundreds of thousands of people swarmed the city’s streets last night in protest against the results of the country’s recent federal elections, in which incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won.

Opponents of Ahmadinejad say the election was fixed and have demanded a recount.

The country’s official leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, who has the final say in all matters, is prepared to allow a limited recount of the election. Ahmadinejad’s fiercest opponent, Mir Hossein Mousavi, has asked for another round of elections, which the Ayatollah has not yet granted.

All journalists working for foreign media have been banned from covering the protests on the ground and foreign reporters who went to cover the elections last week are leaving as their visa’s are not being extended.

Tuvia Stern, a convicted scam artist, was given permission by Curcio to host the Bar Mitzvah party and an engagement party in the jail for months later.

SYRACUSE, N.Y -- Attorneys representing the developer of Destiny USA, Robert Congel, will be in state Supreme Court today.

The developer is taking Citigroup to court because of the bank’s decision to suspend Destiny’s multimillion dollar loan. Congel claims Citigroup is retracting the loan because of the bank’s own financial problems.

Citigroup stopped advancing money, alleging the developer failed to use its own money or obtain additional financing to cover additional costs. So far, Citigroup has loaned the project around $85 million.

20-month-old Imani Jennings was beaten to death in November 2008

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse woman accused of criminally negligent homicide in the death of her 20-month-old daughter was sentenced to 1 1/3 to 4 years in state prison.

County Judge William Walsh handed the sentence to 20-year-old Cherron Patterson, in court today, where she openly sobbed. Patterson’s boyfriend at the time of the toddler’s death, Anthony Weakfall Jr. is being charged as an adult in the second-degree murder of Imani Jennings. She died on November 21, 2008 from being severely beaten. While in custody Patterson gave birth to a child fathered by Weakfall.

A family court proceeding for parental rights and custody is pending.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The woman accused of criminally negligent homicide, in the death of her 20-month-old daughter, will be sentenced in Onondaga County Criminal Court today.
18-year-old Cherron Patterson faces up to four years in prison for failing to get medical attention for her daughter after her 16-year-old boyfriend, severely beat the toddler to death.

Lottery Store

Robert Fantacone is the owner of the Chase Cigar Store in Syracuse and received $10, 000 dollars for selling the winning ticket.

The Store sold a winning ticket worth 35 millions dollars. The store found out it sold the winning ticket several weeks ago but the winner's name was announced today.

This is the fourth time his store has sold a winning ticket. Fantacone has owned this store for 26 years. This is the first time he sold a ticket worth millions.

"Selling the winning ticket puts you on the map," said Fantacone. Fantacone hopes his story will be viewed as a lucky store and will attract more people to his store.

Rose Garden

Rose day at the Thornden Park Rose Garden is two days away and Dan Margaro is working on the finishing touches. Margaro has volunteered for the Rose Garden for 25 years.

"When I started working 25 years ago I put these all in," said Margaro. "The enjoyment that people get is what I get out of it." The garden is around 85 years old and has over 4,000 different types of flowers in it. Margaro says thousands of people come each year just to smell the flowers.

"We don't mind to do the work because it is a beautiful sight," said Margaro. He is currently working on the final touches for the rose pedals.

John Smoltz

John Smoltz performance for the Pawtucket Red Sox against the Syracuse Chief Monday was deemed to be a success. Smoltz actually lost the game giving up four runs in six innings.

Smoltz is trying to come back from a shoulder surgery which has kept him out for alomost a year. "I'm not going to lie its been very difficult," said Smoltz. "I don't even think I have been in the same city for more than four days over the last two months."

Smoltz is now with the Boston Red Sox and wants to prove to his old team, the Atlanta Braves, he still has the ability to pitch. The Braves offered Smoltz a contract in the offseason but Smoltz said the kind of offer was a sign the Braves wanted him to retire.

Smoltz says he will know when it is time to retire but the time has not yet come.

Lottery Winner

The winner of the 35 million dollar lottery ticket was announced to be the Silverbush family. Abe Silverbush bought the ticket from the Chase Cigar Store in Eastwood.

After taxes the family will get a little more than 14 millions dollars. The family of seven will split the money among the seven.

Abe and Celia Silverbush lived and worked in Syracuse all their lives. They plan to continue to work there regular jobs. Abe and Celia plan to buy a new house with the lottery money.

The Silverbushes have five children the oldest being 53 and the youngest is 37. They plan to put money away for their children's college tuition and they say they will do a little bit of shopping.

The plan is supposed to give all Americans health care similar to the ones federal employees have. Obama says the health industry is crushing businesses and families. President Obama wants to cut federal payments to hospitals by 200 billion dollars in 10 years.

Coleman says Yes

Former Syracuse University Basketball star Derrick Coleman wants to implement Say Yes in his home town. "I want to take as much information as possible back to Detroit," said Coleman. "Syracuse is going to be a trailblazer for that." Coleman said this program can make a difference in Detroit. He came to Syracuse to visit Ed Smith Elementary School.

The Ed Smith Elementary School hosted a meeting about the Say Yes program. The program gives money to help high school kids pay for college. Coleman was at the program as an observer.

Coleman will take this information back to another former Syracuse basketball player Dave Bing. Unlike Bing, Coleman said he has no interest in running for office. He said it is always a possibility but he does not think he will ever run for office.

"No matter where I have been I have always participated in everything that goes on in my neighborhood," said Coleman.Coleman said right now he is only focused on helping out his hometown of Detroit.

Movie Man

Jeff Meyer has special movie events a couple times a month. Meyer is a movie fanatic and shows 35 millimeter films at the Palace Theater. He calls these events 'brew and view.' Here you can drink beer while watching a movie.

"If you're a film nerd you have to see it in 35 millimeter print" said Meyer. Meyer also has the Shaun Luu Horror Fest. This event displays old horror films. Meyer charges 8 dollars a ticket for these events and donates all of the money to the Golisano Children's Hospital and/or the American Cancer Association. Jeff Meyer's mother and good friend died of Cancer.

"It's one of those defining moments in your life," said Meyer. "What are you going to do with your life. I realized I'm going to do something good and keep on doing good things." His mother took him to his first film when he was six years old. Meyer said he has been a movie fanatic ever since.

Syracuse Teenager Sentenced: 10 Years to Life in Prison for Sniper Killing

Shawn Rhines was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison for the January 4th shooting death of Casimir Snyder. Before Judge Joseph Fahey announced the sentence, a tearful Nicole Snyder, daughter of Snyder, addressed the court.

"Since my father's death we have been forced to move, our lives have been turned upside down," said Snyder.

Snyder's brother, Robin, also spoke saying, "Young people are so thoughtless today."

Rhines intentionally shot Snyder with a rifle from an attic window. The bullet hit Snyder in the neck and he died shortly after the shooting. Rhines attorney said he was only trying to scare Snyder.

Rhines stood silently in the court never showing any remorse or emotion.

The only thing Rhines said was that he never pictured himself doing something like this.

Ja-Le Johnson who first admitted to being the shooter has started pre-trial hearings. Johnson is being charged with assisting Rhines in the shooting and lying to police.

Rhines was 15 at the time of the shooting but was prosecuted as an adult because of the seriousness of the crime. He's now 16.

Lights Out

Democrats in the New York State Senate have turned off the lights and locked the doors of the Senate floor. This done out of frustration, after Republicans regained a majority earlier this week.

Some Central New Yorkers feel this is just the same old, childish, business as usual in Albany.

"Grow up," says Frank Robbins, CNY resident. "Let's get back to politics. Let's get back to doing what the people need to have done for the state."

Governor Paterson agrees with people such as Robbins and says he wants to do something about it.

"I commit myself to the people of the state of New York that I will not allow this to go on much further," said Paterson, yesterday.

Hail to the Chiefs

Gyros, souvlaki and baklava will be featured dishes at this weeknd's Greek Cultural Festival in Syracuse.

"Everybody likes the Greek food so it doesn't matter what color or religion you are," said Peter Lemoniades, organizer of the event. "It still tastes good."

The festival starts tomorrow and runs through Sunday at the St Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church.

In the 2008 film "What Just Happened," star Robert De Niro plays a Hollywood power producer, who in the beginning, is viewed as one of the top men in the business. After just one bad movie, the media's perception of De Niro's character is drastically changed for the worse.

Although high school lacrosse is slightly less cutthroat than Hollywood, changes in perception can occur just as quickly. Last night, West Genesee boys' team was shockingly unseated as the top team in New York's "Class A," at Cicero-North Syracuse.

A 6-2 loss to Ithaca in the regional quarterfinal, will keep the Wildcats from making their eighth straight State Championship game.

"We played flat the whole game," said West Genny's head coach Mike Messere, who's local fame mirrors that of De Niro's nationally. "We just weren't as patient as we needed to be."

West Genny scored the first two goals early on, but were shutout after that. By day's end, the Wildcats were left asking themselves the title of De Niro's movie.

Ithaca advances to play Orchard Park on Thursday.

A controversial revision has some less worried about background checks

Albany, NY -- NY State's Rockefeller drug law is being revised. After Monday, non-violent felony drug offenders will have their records sealed so that potential employers won't have access to their criminal history during background checks.

Directors at Syracuse Community Treatment Court, which helps recovering addicts find jobs, applauded the measure.

"It's an important part of staying cleaning," said Kim Kozlowski, a drug court director. "You can't graduate from this program and just go back to doing nothing all day. You've got to be in school. You've got to be working. You've got to be a productive citizen."

Others however are concerned that the revision would allow for drug felons to discreetly work at schools.

Safety issues surrounding US Airways flight 1549 are brought to light

Washington, D.C. -- The National Transportation Safety Board began its three-day hearing into safety issues surrounding the "Miracle on the Hudson" landing.

The NTSB heard testimony from key witnesses including U.S. Airways heroic pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger. The captain told an inquiry panel that training in water landings should be mandatory for all pilots.

US Airways flight 1549 pilot, Capt. Sullenberger was forced to ditch the Airbus plane in the Hudson River in January after a bird strike. A flock of Canadian geese were sucked into the plane's engines, disabling them.

All 155 passengers on board the flight survived and were safely evacuated.

Aviation industry groups will meet in Washington on Monday to discuss improving airline safety and pilot training.

Cazenovia Lake is in a battle with one tough weed

Cazenovia, NY-- Eurasian Milfoil is making a dreaded come-back on the waters of Cazenovia Lake. In an effort to keep the lake clear, a new method of killing the invader weeds is underway.

Allied Biological is using a herbicide to kill the milfoil instead of harvesting the weeds.

"One of the problems with harvesting is that it actually helps to spread the plant," said Glenn Sullivan, President of Allied Biological.

Milfoil is problematic because it forms dense vegetation on the surface of the water that interferes with activities such as boating, swimming and fishing. Some local residents have even had their boats trapped.

"It goes from three to twenty feet and then covers the entire lake area," said Albert Alfred Jones.

Milfoil mats on the water are also breeding grounds for mosquitoes and can rob the water of oxygen, drastically altering the underwater ecosystem.

For now docks along Cazenovia Lake remain closed and boaters remain hopeful that the herbicide process will help kill the monster milfoil weeds so they can get their boats back in the water in time for summer fun.

A high unemployment rate is hurting the part-time summer job search

Ice cream at Gannon's Isle Ice Cream Parlor on Valley Drive in Syracuse

Syracuse, NY -- In a tight economy, teens are having trouble finding jobs that often help pay for college. After sinking to a new low in 2007, teen summer employment is expected to fall once again this summer, to the lowest rate in 60 years.

Summer applications at places such as Gannon's Isle Ice Cream Parlor have increased, but unfortunately jobs have decreased. Last year owner Eileen Gannon received 25 summer applications, this year she's received 55.

"I think I hired four, maybe five new kids," said Gannon.

Those lucky teens that are employed by Gannon are thankful for their jobs as well as the perks that come with scooping ice cream.

"There's always air conditioning in here, so I don't have to worry about a hot, sweaty job and we get all the ice cream that we can eat so it's definitely nice," said employee Ted Curtin, 19.

Husband Admits to Assaulting Wife

Albion, NY -- NY State police have charged Patrick McLeod, 54, with the murder of his wife, Marie McLeod, 46. According to police, he was arraigned in Albion Town Court earlier today and charged with second-degree murder after evidence from autopsy results.

Marie McLeod was found dead in the couple's home at 293 Barber Road around mid-day Sunday.

State police said Patrick McLeod drove himself to the State Police barracks in Pulaski. Police found him sitting in his car in the parking lot at 6:45 a.m. McLeod then admitted to police he assaulted his wife.

The Lewis Goodman Chrysler dealership closes its doors

Syracuse, NY --The Lewis Goodman Chrysler dealership on West Genesee Street celebrated a bitter sweet anniversary. June 1st was the dealership's 50th anniversary, but today was its last day of operation.

Employees received a letter late May from corporate headquarters at Chrysler with bad news.

"They gave us three weeks to go," said service center manager Dana Kuhlman.

The dealership had a mere 21 days to sell all of its inventory including every car in the lot and every part that went along with those vehicles.

"It's the carpet out from underneath of you, you know, it was that sudden," said Kuhlman.

Since the letter was sent, Chrysler has cut all ties with Lewis Goodman. According to employees they can't even access the Chrysler corporate website.

Chrysler closed over 800 dealerships across the country. Part of the reason was due to poor product quality, but a frustrated Kuhlman said it's not Lewis Goodman's fault.

"We didn't build the cars. We're not the ones that sat down and designed them and said this is what we're going to sell."

Two Dissident Democrats and the GOP Shift the Power Balance

Albany, NY --After being out of power for over four decades, Democrats have lost control of the Senate in only five short months to Republicans yet again, after a surprise coup. The tables turned after two renegade Democrats crossed party lines to vote alongside the GOP.

Senators Pedro Espada, Jr. of the Bronx and Hiram Monserrate of Queens joined the Republicans in a 32-30 victory that changed the leadership structure of the Senate. Despite their decisions, neither Senators changed party affiliation.

The move stripped the vice presidency away from CNY State Sen. Dave Valesky.

Governor David Paterson did not have much to say about the decision, but he wanted people to know he wasn't pleased by it.

"The last two weeks of session is not the time when we conduct campaigns. It is not the time when we elect leaders. It is not the time for politics. It's time for governments," said Paterson.

Legislation that the majority of Republicans did not support such as the same-sex marriage bill will no longer have enough votes to pass.

Democratic leaders and lawyers are deciding what their next move will be. They are expected to challenge the vote in court. According to some Democrats, the Republicans had been planning the takeover for weeks.

A CNY Racetrack Struggles to Keep the Tradition Alive as the Economy Falters and Casino Competition Invades

Syracuse, NY --Owners of Vernon Downs Race Track in Verona, NY are faced with a difficult future. Representatives said they have taken a five percent decrease in revenue over the past two years --and both jockeys and owners know what's to blame.

"What hurts us here at Vernon is that three miles down the road we have the Turning Stone Casino," said jockey Cole Wimmer. "And for whatever reason people are just drawn to that place, I don't know why."

Business has declined at Vernon as more people bypass the track, drawn to the enticing world of tables, slots and hotel commodities. A bad economy has also decreased profits. But, another part of the problem is that racing fans are from an older generation. Tracks like Vernon are having a hard time attracting younger clientele to keep the tradition -- and business -- alive.

"I'm here because I love it and I love playing the horses. I've been playing them for 35 years," said racing fan Ed Marie.

It's All in the Family
Brown University grad, Frank Antonnacci has more than just ivy league on his resume. He's also a third generation jockey, attempting to carry on the family business.

"My grandfather actually started in the business back at Roosevelt Raceway," said Antonnacci.

And Antonnacci sees the future of horse racing as a glass half full.

An Opportunity?
Antonnacci thinks tracks should view encroaching casinos as an advantage rather than big competition.

"What I'm seeing now is a chance for a renaissance with slot induced purses and the exposure that casinos are bringing to race tracks again," said Antonnacci. "I think that we have a unique opportunity in the short future to reposition the game."

Fly Fishing

Syracuse, NY -- For the last 30 years, Loren Williams has turned his passion into a career.

At the age of six, Williams' father taught him how to fly fish and now, Williams is the owner of a fish food re-creation business. He also serves as a guide to those interested in trying the fly fishing experience.

In 2005, Williams was named the first official team fly tyer for Flying Fishing Team USA.

The hobby of fly tying was a popular pastime in his native Pennsylvania Poconos.

Each morning, Williams hikes approximately one mile through rough terrain until he finds a section of stream he likes. Then he spends the rest of the morning doing what he loves.

Williams explained that fly fishing isn't as difficult as it sometimes seems.

"They have this image of these long casts and all this other stuff that, yea, you can do it, but that's the pictorial calendar connotation of fly fishing," he said. "That's the fly casting part of fly fishing. The fishing part is catching fish. It doesn't have to be complicated."

Pit Bull Attacks on the Rise in Syracuse

Syracuse, NY --Pit Bull attacks in the city are at an all-time high. Within the past six months, 19 bites have been reported to the city's dog control department. Police say that's double the number of attacks from all of last year.

"They are there for a specific purpose, said Lt. Joe Cecile of the Syracuse Police, "to attack anyone who comes to the house, including police."

N-C-C News Reporter Brittni Smallwood rode along with CNY SPCA investigator Officer Ross Areina on two reported Pit Bull cases.

Complaint One

At the first house on the West Side, anonymous callers complained of negligent owners allowing their Pit Bulls to run loose in an abandoned yard. Yet, officers were unable to find evidence of the animals posing any dangerous threats or running wild.

Complaint Two

At the second house, officers investigated owners who were allegedly using their Pit Bulls for dog fighting. However, after a thorough investigation the dogs were found to be in good health with no signs of animal cruelty.

The Strength of Pit Bulls

The American Pit Bull Terrier breed is known for its strength, protective nature and predatory instincts. An average adult male Pit Bull can weigh between 50 and 80 pounds. However, because of its powerful jaw structure, it is capable of pulling up to 2,000 pounds.

SPCA Director, Paul Morgan agreed that Pit Bulls are powerful animals. "I mean if you look at them, they're all muscle."

Dangerous Attack Dogs or Devoted Family Pets?
While many Pit Bull are raised to fight and attack, animal experts say they can make great family pets-- it all depends on how the dog is raised.

"I don't care what the animal is, if you're not training the animal or if you are training it to fight or to be an aggressive animal you're gonna have problems," said Morgan.

SPCA Officer Ross Areina agreed, "If you're a good owner and you do the right things and train them properly and get the right training for them, you can have a good dog."

Recession Hits the Links

Syracuse, NY -- Local golf courses are being hit with a penalty stroke because of the struggling economy.

Golfers seem to be falling into three different groups. The first is made up of those who are canceling their memberships and giving up golf because it's just too expensive. The second is comprised of those who will continue to tee it up, regardless of the cost. The final group is made up of those who are making the switch from traditional golf courses to the more cost-friendly Par-3 style courses which are made up of shorter holes.

Marvin Bodley is a member of Drumlins golf course and one of only two people who were playing golf at Drumlins on Monday afternoon. He said he was one of the lucky few who could continue playing the game he loves.

"I'm retired and I've been quite fortunate in my retirement," Bodley said. "I try and work in the golf regardless because it's something that is a big part of my life. But I have seen some of my friends that definitely have had to cut back."

Some golf managers in the area say they believe that many golfers will start frequenting Par 3 or municipal golf courses such as Sunnycrest or Popes Grove if they decide to cancel their memberships to more expensive courses.

Anne Fox, the business manager at Drumlins, says the course could survive one or two years of economic troubles before layoffs would have to be considered.

New Swine Flu Cases in Onondaga County

Syracuse, NY -- The Onondaga County Health Department announced today that there are 16 new confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus within the county.

The new cases include 14 children and two adults. One of the adults was hospitalized and has recovered.

To date, there have been 69 confirmed cases in Onondaga County, including one death.

The Health Department will only approve testing of H1N1 for hospitalized patients.

Piccoli Pleads Guilty

Buffalo, NY -- Richard Piccoli pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Buffalo to charges of mail fraud and tax evasion.

The 82-year-old is the architect of a multimillion dollar Ponzi scheme. Approximately 150 of his victims looked on as he entered his plea.

Piccoli could be sentenced to up to 25 years in federal prison. He could also be fined $50 million.

Piccoli admitted that he promised investors guaranteed returns on real estate investments he knew did not exist.

Federal regulators are still calculating how much money Piccoli collected. Authorities originally estimated the sum to be at least $17 million.

He was released until October 21 when he will face sentencing. He did not comment as he left the courthouse.

Maffei Explains Stimulus Spending

Liverpool, NY -- Congressman Dan Maffei was at the Liverpool Holiday Inn this morning to discuss the economic stimulus plan.

He warned those in attendance that was not going to sugarcoat the economic situation.

"We are in a real time of challenge," Maffei said.

Even the man Maffei beat to win his congressional seat, Dale Sweetland, agreed with the congressman.

"Business is not anywhere as it used to be - it doesn't come as easily," Sweetland said.

The breakdown for the stimulus money is as follows:

$288 billion for tax relief
$144 million to state and local governments
$50 million to healthcare and education

More than 200 local business owners were in attendance to learn how they can take advantage of the stimulus money.

"Businesses who are here can even take this back to their companies and share it and they will take some action to get additional benefit for private sector jobs and their employees here in Central New York," said Deb Warner from the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce.

Maffei emphasized the importance of working hard and not giving up hope.

"We really are like a family and because of that and because of any family going through a crisis - we are going to get through this, work together, be together and in the end we're going to end up better than we are today," Maffei said.

Gas Prices Continue to Rise

Syracuse, NY -- Syracuse drivers are now paying an average of $2.68 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline. According to AAA, the national average is $2.62.

In the last month, the average price for a gallon of gas in Syracuse has risen 40 cents, according to syracusegasprices.com . In the last two months it has soared by 72 cents.

At this time last summer, motorists were paying $4.14 a gallon.

Nationally, the cost for a barrel of crude oil has stalled at $68.42.

New York Governor Speaks on Technology and Research

New York, NY -- Governor David Paterson announced today that institutions and companies are ready to compete for nearly $100 million in matching technology and research grants.

Paterson spoke Monday afternoon at Sensis Corporation in East Syracuse. Earlier Monday morning, Paterson was in New York City with the same message.

Speaking at the New York Academy of Science, Paterson said the grants could benefit several areas, including renewable energy, biomedical research and cyber-security.

Paterson said that the investment could become nearly $1 billion in federal funding.

New Orleans Mayor Quarantined

New Orleans -- New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, his wife and a security guard are resting comfortably in Shanghai after they were put into quarantine yesterday. A passenger on their flight out of Newark, NJ exhibited symptoms of Swine Flu, prompting the quarantine.

Three other city employees were on the flight but they were not sitting close enough to the passenger to warrant a quarantine.

Nagin is said to be feeling well but there is no word on when he and the other quarantined passengers will be released.

The mayor has been in contact with city officials in New Orleans and city business is continuing as normal according to the mayor's spokeswoman, Ceeon Quiett.

Nearly 22,000 people have been infected with the Swine Flu worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

Nagin left for China on Friday for an economic development trip. Chinese authorities quarantined everyone who sat near the passenger on the flight from Newark, New Jersey.

Pastor Sees Lot as Key to Youth Safety

Syracuse, NY -- Pastor Nebraski Carter is taking his calling outside the walls of the Living Water Church of God in Christ.

"We don't have any place for youth to come and do work and try to get them on the right path," said Carter. "We have a lot of violence here."

Carter is trying to change that by building a youth community center on a rundown lot his church purchased from city for $1,150. The purchase was approved by the Common Council.

Living Water is one of several churches to purchase lots in the hopes of turning the run-down properties into places that will rejuvenate their communities.

Carter is currently trying to raise funds to build the community center.

Former SU Basketball Star Help Raise Money at Taco Bell

Syracuse, NY -- The Syracuse University all-time leader in three-point shots made, free throw percentage, and minutes played, was back in Syracuse on Sunday.

McNamara will be hosting two sessions of his basketball camp at Onondaga Community College this month.

Gerry McNamara was at the Taco Bell on Erie Boulevard on Sunday, helping to raise money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Syracuse.

"It's to raise awareness and give money back to the club so the kids have someplace to go after school," said Laurie Fine, Director of the Syracuse branches of the Boys and Girls Club. "[McNamara has] brought so much to Syracuse and he gives back so much."

"I love being here and when you can be here for a good cause like the Boys and Girls Club is even better," McNamara said.

A five dollar donation got fans a basketball autographed by the former SU standout.

The money will be used for kids' lunches, summer programs and guest speakers.

McNamara graduated from Syracuse University in 2006. He won two Big East Championships and the 2003 National Championship.

He will be hosting two sessions of his three-day basketball camp at OCC beginning with the first session this Friday-Sunday. The second session will be next Friday-Sunday.

Cyclists Ride For a Cure

Verona Beach, NY -- The American Diabetes Association has received more than $140,000 from a bike-riding fundraiser held on Sunday.

More than 550 bicyclists gathered at Verona Beach State Park for the Tour de Cure, an annual bike ride to fight diabetes. The ride, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, offered five different courses for riders to choose from.

The event drew cyclists of all ages and riders chose courses that ranged from 15 miles to 100 miles, the latter being recommended only for experienced riders.

"This is for all ages; it's for the kids, for moms and dads, for grams and grandpa," said Michael Viti, chairman of the ADA chapter in Utica.

Viti said that despite the difficult economy, this year's event drew more riders than ever before.

"We talk about how tough the economy is and how things are really hitting everybody but you know what, people still come together," said Viti. "They do their job and they feel responsible themselves to help fight the cause and try to find a cure."

Riders were required to raise a minimum of $150 in order to participate in the ride.

Officials say donations will continue to come in until the end of the month.

Similar events were held on Sunday in five other locations throughout New York.

According to the ADA, there are 23.6 million Americans living with diabetes, including 5.7 million who do not even know they have the disease.

Townsend Towers and Harrison House Tenants Forced to Relocate

SYRACUSE, NY - Syracuse Housing Authority is working to relocate nearly 200 tenants from the Townsend Tower and the Harrison House. The complexes have a history of low vacancies, poor management, code violations, and crime. They have also accrued about 10 million dollars in unpaid mortgage expenses.

Syracuse Housing Authority said they are working with every person to “get what services or what assistance (they) need to make the relocation happen”.

Many tenants said the relocation could have been avoided if repairs and security were maintained over the years. Syracuse Housing Authority hopes each tenant will be moved out by this fall.

New Yorkers have more power over local government

SYRACUSE, NY - A new bill passed by New York's State Assembly made it easier for villages to consolidate their fire departments and other local governments.

The town supervisor in the village of Van Buren, Claude Sykes thinks the bill is a good proposition. Sykes said all four of the town’s fire departments respond to every 911 call. He stressed that normally only one team is needed, and when all four respond, the town is wasting a lot of money.

In Minoa, the Mayor wasn’t as optimistic. Minoa has a little over 3,000 people and Mayor Dick Donavon said the grass roots government and services are needed and if any are eliminated then people will suffer and jobs will be lost. “Just doing what the state is doing is an arbitrary band aid and they think it will save money but in the end it will not” said Mayor Donavon.

The new legislation allows only ten percent of a community’s registered voters needs to vote in order to eliminate any part of the local government that's considered unnecessary or outdated.

Former Music Teacher Faces Jail Time

SYRACUSE, NY - Former Onondaga Music Teacher Albert Scerbo was found guilty today for one felony count of first degree sexual abuse and a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child. Families of the victims and Scerbo convened at the Onondaga County Court for the verdict early Thursday morning.

Judge William Walsh also found Scerbo not guilty of one count Sexual Conduct against a child in the second degree and one misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child. Originally Scerbo was charged with 35 counts of endangering the welfare of 17 children, but since his first trial began in 2007 many of his charges were dismissed.

The verdict was emotional for the families. One Onondaga Nation parent said “It’s been tough on my daughter. She went through a period when she wasn’t eating.”

Sentencing is scheduled for August 12th at the New York Court of Appeals. Albert Scerbo could face up to seven years in prison.

Paulus Returns to Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NY - Greg Paulus is back playing football in Central New York. Paulus said he chose with “his gut and heart” to play for SU’s football team this fall as quarterback. After playing High School football at CBA in Syracuse , and college basketball at Duke University, Paulus is left with one year of eligibility.

He said he’s optimistic about the challenge ahead of him, particularly, the playbook. “I’m working my way through it. It’s a good playbook” said Paulus. “It’s one I’m really excited about. Coach Marrone and Coach Spence have done a really good job putting it together and I can tell you I’m working through it.”

Off the Hill, Paulus has many critics. Many NFL analysts have commented that they are skeptical to see if Paulus will be an “effective quarterback” this upcoming season, but for many of his teammates and coaches they're optimistic. “Just from observing summer training,” teammate Lavar Lobdell added, “the Orange strength coaches says Paulus has already earned the trust and respect of his new teammates”.

Paulus said he is not worried about the critics; instead he is keeping his eyes on the playbook so he can be ready for the upcoming season.

A New Beginning Could Bring New Opportunities for the Community

SYRACUSE, NY - The Mary Nelson Community Center is dedicated to bring health, education, and career services to the community. The center’s official opening is Monday, June 8th. Its founder, Mary Nelson, said their goal is to “offer tutoring, recreation and mentoring programs, computer classes for youths and adults, and it will connect residents to social services”.

Nelson wants the youth to be off the streets and in school finishing their education. She hopes to build better relationships with the kids and work with them from day to day versus once or twice a year. She also wants to ensure that each child has enough food so they never have to go hungry.

The children inspired Nelson to open the center. “You can address the needs of the family" said Nelson, "and if you produce all four components (family component, education, health, and career services) you produce a healthy family.”

Community support funds the Mary Nelson Community Center which is located on 2849 S. Salina St. in Syracuse, New York. The organization said they’re applying for grants but if anyone is interested in giving, any donations would be greatly appreciated.

President Obama's Declaration Overseas

CAIRO - President Barack Obama called for stronger relations between the United States and Muslims during his speech in Cairo, Egypt. Obama said together they can work to make a difference and seek peace; and tackle educational, economic and scientific issues.

“We have a responsibility to join together on behalf of the world we seek,” said President Obama. “A world where extremists no longer threaten our people, and American troops have come home; a world where Israelis and Palestinians are each secure in a state of their own, and nuclear energy is used for peaceful purposes; a world where governments serve their citizens, and the rights of all God’s children are respected.”

President Obama also announced a new international fund “to support technological development in Muslim majority countries”. His plans also include a partnership with the Organization of Islamic Conference to eliminate polio.

Obama said that if the United States and the Muslim world work together versus competing against one another than they can “confront violent extremism” across the world and spur dynamic change.

Onondaga County Adult Dies of Swine Flu

SYRACUSE, NY--The state's first Swine Flu death outside of New York City was reported in Onondaga County this morning. The spokesperson for the county's Health Department, Dr. Cynthia Morrow, held a press conference to announce the death but did not release the gender, age, or name of the individual. Morrow did state that the individual was an adult who had been hospitalized for the H1N1 virus and had other underlying health problems.

"I was certainly hoping that we would not be here making this type of announcement, but it's always been within the realm of possibility," said Morrow, who upheld that the Swine Flu was no deadlier than any other common strain of the flu.

Nearly 36,000 Americans die each year from flu infections, 2,000 in New York State alone. With the death in Onondaga County and two more deaths in New York City today, eight New Yorkers have now died of the Swine Flu. Ten new cases of the virus in Onondaga County were confirmed today, bringing the county's total to 42 cases. A total of 780 Swine Flu cases have been reported in New York State.

In a statement today, Governor David Paterson alluded to these statistics, stating that Swine Flu deaths, while unfortunate, are not unlikely.

“As more cases of H1N1 are identified in New York State, unfortunately, we expect some cases to be fatal, especially for those who contract the virus and have underlying medical conditions," said Paterson. "This is consistent with what we see during our influenza season each year."

Morrow emphasized the importance of continuing suggested preventative measures.

"Nothing has changed in terms of our message to the public and that is please, if you're sick, stay at home," she said. "We want to minimize the transmission of this virus."

Central New Yorkers Prepare for Upcoming Digital Switch

SYRACUSE, NY--The June 12 switch from analog to digital television is fast approaching, and many Central New Yorkers are having a difficult time with the conversion.

"I think the whole thing is just absurd," said Syracuse resident Phillip Crosby. "This transition is a waste of time and money. The economy is bad enough. Analog has worked for how many years?! Don't change it!"

Fellow Syracuse resident Robin Joy agreed.

"Especially in today's economy, we don't have another forty dollars to buy another box just to listen to our local channels."

A Nielsen Media Research reported that as of last week, 3.1 million Americans were still unequipped for next week's switch. Analog owners looking to go digital have three options: buy a new television, buy a converter box, or subscribe to cable television.

The government offered consumers two forty-dollar coupons to minimize the cost of converter boxes. With the coupon, boxes can cost as little as ten dollars. As of May 16, Syracuse residents requested more than 150,000 of these government coupons, but only 80,000 had been redeemed.

David Murray, who works at RA-LIN Discount in Syracuse, thinks he knows the reason for the disparity.

"When they see how much the prices have dropped, especially on smaller TVs they skip the converter and buy a TV," said Murray. "It gave a lot of people the incentive to get a new TV."

RA-LIN has seen HDTV sales spike in the past few months.

"Most people know the converter box isn't going to give you High Def, just keep you able to keep television," said Murray. "Everybody's seen HD by now, either in a store or friend's house, so they're kind of liking that idea."

Analog transmission was originally scheduled to end in February this year, but Congress voted to delay the switch until June 12th because many weren't ready for the change.

State Takes Over Afflicted Housing Complex

Officials to relocate about 100 people

SYRACUSE- The state has been forced to take over two downtown Syracuse public housing buildings. The Harrison House and Townsend Tower were constructed in the 1970's to provide housing for less-fortunate families.

Low vacancy rates, crime and mounting debts are a few of the reasons the houses were shut down.

"I don't know what's going down, so most likely they'll let somebody know a specific spot that are going to put certain people in certain spots," said one resident.

The complexes currently owe more than $2 million in city and Onondaga County property taxes and almost $10 million in back mortgage payments.

The move comes as a relief to one resident.

"I never really liked the building anyway," said the resident.

Each building has approximately 200 units, only 40 of which are occupied. The state is asking the Syracuse Housing Authority to manage the complexes and start plans to move any remaining tenants.

Veto will save millions

ALBANY-- Governor Paterson today vetoed a public pension sweetener for recently hired police and firefighters. Paterson's veto is a start towards fulfilling his promise to cap New York spending.

Paterson said vetoing the measure extended by the Legislature every two years since 1981 will save millions for local and state governments.

He also said today the veto is part of his effort to modify the public worker pension system he says has become unaffordable for taxpayers.

The Legislature still has the opportunity to override the veto.

Body Art Booming Despite Economy

SYRACUSE, NY--At a time when there is little demand for luxury goods, tattoos seem to be, if not recession-proof, at least recession-resistant even here in Syracuse.

No national association exists for the tattoo industry, making it difficult to gauge its national trends. However, tattoo parlors across the country are reporting a steady rise in profits. Halo Tattoos, which has three locations in the Syracuse area, is no exception.

Randy Rode, a Halo Tattoo patron, said he will not be giving up tattoos any time soon.

"I just like art in itself," said Rode. "I just like tattoos. Makes me look tough. Helps me keep working out so I don't want to get flabby if I got tattoos on me."

Another Halo patron, Hillery Slodki, said its the cultural appeal of the thousands-year-old art that keeps her coming back.

"I was an art major in college, and I enjoy artwork," said Slodki. And I'm really intrigued by tattoos in general. And the stories behind them...all different cultures."

According to a 2006 Pew Study, nearly 40 percent of 18- to 40-year-olds have a tattoo.

Vote revokes 1962 Cold War measure

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras- The Organization of American States (OAS) said today it has taken away a 1962 measure suspending communist Cuba. This reverses a landmark event of the Cold War.

Ecuador's Foreign Minister Fander Falconi says it sets mechanisms for Cuba's return--including its agreement to abide by OAS conventions.

United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton drove the OAS to require Cuba to make democratic reforms and improve its kindness towards human rights.

However, Cuba's government repeatedly said it has no interest in returning to the OAS, calling the Organization a tool of the United States.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said the United States continues to use the OAS as "an instrument of domination."

Honduran President Manuel Zelaya said the United States embargo on Cuba a "day of infamy."

"Friends, it is time to correct that mistake," Zelaya said.

Ex-Buffalo Bills running back Thurman Thomas headlines field

BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y.- Foxfire Golf Club played host to one of the first charity golf tournaments of the year in Central New York. Wal-Mart was the lead sponsor of the event, which featured former Buffalo Bills star Thurman Thomas.

Most of the money raised in the event will go towards fighting pediatric cancer.

Thomas helped lead the Bills to four straight Super Bowl appearances in the early 1990's. While the Bills lost all four games, Thomas came out a winner today in helping fight pediatric cancer.

"Oh, we're just having a good time," said Thomas. "That's what it's all about. Just coming out here, having a good time, meeting new people, but most of all, trying to raise as much money as we possibly can."

It was no surprise Thomas appeared at the event because Wal-Mart is a big sponsor of the Thurman Thomas Foundation, which helps inner-city kids have the opportunity to play organized sports.

"They've been a tremendous supporter of my foundation for the last two years, so anything that I can do to help their foundation is great," said Thomas.

Sponsors paid $1500 to enter a team of four into the tournament. Cassandra Rucker, Associate Director of Galisano's Children's Hospital, said how much money the golf tournament can produce.

"At a golf tournament like today, with their vendors here...we'll raise over $50,000."

Obama Reverses Bush Immigration Lawyer Rule

Reversal allows immigrants facing deportation a lawyer

WASHINGTON D.C.- The Obama administration today reversed a Bush administration rule that said immigrants facing deportation do not have an automatic right to an effective lawyer.

Attorney General Eric Holder said he is vacating the order, which was issued by predecessor Michael Mukasey. Holder said he is instructing the Justice Department to begin creating a new rule.

Charles Kuck, president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, said the move is "the beginning of the restoration of due process in the immigration system."

Today, Holder also said Mukasey's decision had not allowed for adequate public comment on the issue.

United States immigration courts currently do not track how many immigrants want to reopen cases due to claims of ineffective counsel.

Terror Plot Suspects Appear in Federal Court

The four men plead not guilty

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.- Four men accused of crafting a terror plot targeting New York City synagogues and upstate military airplanes appeared today in a federal court in White Plains.

The suspects pleaded not guilty to additional charges in the case.

James Cromitie, Laguerre Payen, David Williams and Onta Williams continue to be held without bail. They were arrested May 20 after an FBI sting. They face charges of conspiracy and attempting to use weapons of mass destruction.

If convicted, they could face life in prison.

Payen's lawyer says his client is bipolar and schizophrenic, but a prosecutor says Payen is well enough to understand court proceedings.

Air France Debris Found

High winds and seas slowing recovery efforts

FERNANDO DE NORONHA, Brazil- More debris from Air France flight 447, which disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean, was found earlier today by Brazilian pilots.

The pilots spotted a 23-foot chunk of plane and a 12-mile long oil slick from the air above the Atlantic Ocean.

Search vessels from several nations made their way toward the debris located by the pilots. However, high seas and high winds were greatly slowing the recovery effort and delaying the arrival of deep-water submersibles.

Air Force spokesman Col. Jorge Amaral says that rescuers have still failed to find any signs of life from the plane carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.

Earlier today, Brazil's O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper published a more complete chronology of the demise of Flight 447, which says it may have broken up thousands of feet in the air as it passed through a violent storm.

NY Committee Supports Legalizing Mixed Martial Arts

Committee reverses decision from last year

ALBANY- The Committee on Tourism, Arts and Sports Development voted to send the full Assembly a bill that would give the New York State Athletic Commission the ability to regulate and legalize the sport. The vote reverses the decision last year to block the legislation.

Assemblyman Jonathan Bing of Manhattan says the ruling would put controls on a sport that is practiced illegally in New York State, but legal in 38 states. Bing also says legalizing the sport will bring tax revenue to the state.

The opposition is led by Assemblyman Robert Reilly of suburban Albany who says it would promote a culture of violence and he is "not optimistic" about defeating the bill in the full Assembly.

A Senate committee is scheduled to vote next week.

SYRACUSE, NY--The first H1N1 death in Onondaga County was reported this morning. The New York City Health Department announced two more H1N1 deaths today. Both individuals were in their 40s. Seven people in New York City have died from the virus. All but one of the deaths happened to individuals with other health problems; the remaining case is still being investigated.
